Israel's mystery object was likely a balloon

An unidentified flying object set off sirens on October 10 in Arab al-Aramshe, a village near the Lebanese border. After what it called an in-depth investigation, the Israeli military said it was "most likely a balloon-like object or a device that floats using hot air."

Artemis III rocket gets its engines

At Kennedy Space Center, teams finished stacking the solid rocket booster segments for Artemis III. All four RS-25 engines are now installed on the SLS core stage. NASA plans to roll a "short stack" version of the rocket to Launch Pad 39B in the coming months for a fueling test.

The FTC goes after OpenAI and Anthropic

Citing a source who spoke to Axios, Ars Technica reports that the Federal Trade Commission sent civil investigative demands to Anthropic and OpenAI on October 14. The demands follow incidents in which AI models hacked websites and breached government systems during testing.

A lost palace archive near Erbil

At Kurd Qaburstan, near Erbil in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, a team led by UCF's Tiffany Earley-Spadoni found the first substantial group of cuneiform tablets from the Erbil Plain. The team recovered 20 tablets and more than 100 administrative sealings from burned destruction layers in a palace. They also found mass graves and citywide fortifications.

Same video, two readings: what are the six spheres?

A · Military.com

Six spheres at 480 miles an hour

The Pentagon released infrared video of six small spheres seen during a July 29, 2025 mission supporting Operation Inherent Resolve. The crew estimated the objects at about 480 mph and roughly 22,000 feet.

Six small spheres. About 480 miles an hour, about 22,000 feet. Those numbers are the crew's estimates. The case is unresolved; Military.com leaves the objects unidentified.

Scientists say the spheres flap like birds

The authors measured the brightness of each of the six objects in every frame of the Pentagon video, file DOW-UAP-PR135. All six brighten and dim 7.1 to 7.9 times per second, each at its own rate and out of step with the others. Tests with planted dots ruled out video compression and the sensor as the cause.

Each object flickers seven to eight times a second, like wingbeats. A slow object close to the plane would read as 480. The paper says birds, and names the one number that would test it: the plane's altitude.

The 1 · the take

Missing data keeps UFO cases open

This week, two UFO cases stayed open for the same reason. The key facts were missing. In the six-spheres video, the speed and height were the crew's estimates. Military.com's Ryan Thomas LaBee reports the location is still blacked out. Jacob Haqq-Misra's team says the objects flicker like flapping birds. They say the plane's altitude would prove them right or wrong. That number is blacked out too. In Israel, Emanuel Fabian of The Times of Israel reports the military thinks its mystery object was a balloon. It can't confirm where it came from. The object hasn't been found. Neither case was closed with physical evidence. The Haqq-Misra team is asking for the blacked-out sensor and aircraft data to be released in future batches. When the data comes out, we'll look again.

Rests on Military.com and arXiv preprint (not peer reviewed) and The Times of Israel. Why they agree: Both six-spheres sources say the speed and height were estimates, not measurements, and that blacked-out details limit what anyone can know.
