AM EDITION

Thursday Listening Post

Put your headphones on: this is what space "sounds" like

Space is silent to our ears, but telescope data can be turned into sound. Three short listens for tonight, all from NASA and its observatories:

  1. The center of our galaxy. A region about 400 light-years across, 26,000 light-years away, played as an ensemble: Chandra, Hubble and Spitzer each play a different instrument. Listen at Chandra
  2. A whole gallery of cosmic sounds. Nebulae, galaxies and star clusters turned into music, one image at a time. Hubble sonifications
  3. What we sent the other way. In 1977 the two Voyager probes left carrying a golden record of Earth: greetings, music and everyday sounds, in case anyone out there ever listens. See what's on the Golden Record
Tap for the question we're left with

The Golden Record was made for listeners who might never come. If someone did send a record our way, would we know how to play it?

Tomorrow: come back for the next one.

On the ark in a storm, the animals think, “What’s wrong with these people?” Giraffes, an elephant, monkeys, skunks and penguins look on, horrified, as Noah asks, “Can’t we leave some behind?” A man in the sea grabs the side of the ark. Above, a bearded figure blows up the wind and a young woman looks down from the glowing clouds, alarmed.

Astronomers found a mysterious object beyond Neptune, and it could be a new dwarf planet

The powerful Vera Rubin Observatory has spotted what seems to be a dwarf planet circling the sun in the frigid depths beyond Neptune. The icy object, known as 2026 ED138, is likely between 600 and 1500 kilometers (373 to 972 miles) wide, scientists say. It's therefore probably big enough to be sculpted into a sphere by its own gravity — a key characteristic that separates dwarf planets from asteroids and other small space rocks.
